Acoustic Door Ratings Explained: dB, STC, Rw and Test Reports

A quotation for a 45 dB acoustic door looks straightforward until another supplier offers an STC 45 door. Are the two equivalent? Not automatically. Before comparing prices, a contractor or importer needs to know what was measured, how the result was rated, and which door assembly the evidence covers.

This guide explains how to evaluate acoustic door ratings and turn a product enquiry into a specification that can be checked before production.

1. A dB figure needs a defined measurement

The decibel, written dB, is a unit used for several acoustic quantities. A product description that says only “45 dB” does not identify the test method, frequency range or rating procedure. Ask whether the figure is a nominal product option, a laboratory rating for a complete door set, or a measurement made between two finished rooms.

Do not subtract a brochure figure from a room noise level to predict the adjoining room. For example, an 80 dB source and a nominal 45 dB door do not establish a guaranteed 35 dB receiving-room level. Room acoustics, the surrounding construction and other transmission paths also influence the result.

2. STC and Rw describe different rating systems

Sound Transmission Class (STC) is calculated using ASTM E413 from laboratory transmission-loss measurements under ASTM E90. Weighted sound reduction index (Rw) is an ISO rating determined under ISO 717-1; laboratory airborne sound insulation measurements can be made under ISO 10140-2.

Both condense frequency-dependent performance into a single number, but their procedures differ. A nominal dB option must not be relabelled STC or Rw without the corresponding report. When a specification requires STC 45, ask for evidence reporting STC for the proposed assembly rather than accepting a generic “45 dB” statement.

3. Check the complete door set, not just the leaf

A door leaf is only one part of the opening. The frame, perimeter seals, bottom sealing arrangement, glazing and hardware must work together. Evidence for a solid single-leaf door does not automatically establish the same result for a larger double-leaf door or a door with an observation window.

Compare the proposed product against the report and associated drawings. Record differences and obtain a documented assessment or suitable testing where needed. Do not treat a similar-looking product photograph as proof of equivalent acoustic performance.

4. Match the product option to the design brief

Shenghao offers the following nominal acoustic door options:

Nominal acoustic option Door leaf thickness Specification check
30 / 35 dB 70 mm Confirm the selected grade and assembly evidence
40 / 45 dB 90 mm Confirm seals, glazing, hardware and test scope
52 dB 110 mm Review the complete assembly and surrounding room design

These are product selection options, not a claim that every size and configuration has the same tested result. Door thickness alone does not establish STC, Rw or a guaranteed site reduction. View the custom acoustic door specification and finish options before preparing an enquiry.

5. Use a test-report review checklist

  • Identity: laboratory, report number, date, applicant and exact product reference.
  • Method: measurement standard, rating standard and the result actually reported.
  • Specimen: overall dimensions, leaf count, leaf thickness and frame construction.
  • Details: vision-panel size and glazing build-up, seals, threshold, latch and closer.
  • Installation: supporting wall, fixing arrangement and frame-to-wall treatment.
  • Data: frequency-band results and any stated limitations or permitted variations.

For KTV, cinema or music rooms, review the noise spectrum with the project acoustician. A single-number rating can conceal weaknesses at frequencies important to the actual source, particularly bass-heavy playback.

6. Separate laboratory performance from site acceptance

Laboratories control transmission paths around the specimen. A finished building also contains walls, ceilings, ducts and service penetrations. Sound passing around the door can limit the room’s isolation even when the supplied door matches its laboratory configuration.

Agree the acceptance method before ordering: required door rating, room-to-room criterion, site test procedure and responsibility for installation are separate items. For practical site coordination, read our soundproof door seals and installation guide.

What to send for an acoustic door quotation

Send the room use, noise source, required rating system, quantities, finished opening sizes and wall thickness. Add a plan showing handing, single or double leaf, solid or glazed construction, finish, hardware and any separate fire or accessibility requirements.

Dongguan Shenghao Door Industry Technology Co., Ltd. offers single-color, wood-grain and upholstered finishes, with optional round or rectangular observation windows subject to configuration review. Frequently asked questions

Does a 90 mm leaf automatically mean STC 45?

No. Shenghao’s 90 mm leaf is offered with nominal 40 / 45 dB options. An STC claim requires the appropriate test evidence for the proposed assembly.

Can an acoustic rating prove fire resistance?

No. Specify and verify fire performance separately for the complete proposed door set.

What if the project specification only says “soundproof”?

Ask the designer to define the acoustic metric, target and evidence required before comparing supplier offers.
